Guard passes to beat the butterfly

Very versatile and effective, the butterfly guard has contributed to historic wins by many BJJ idols, like Fernando Tererê, Vitor Shaolin, Marcelo Garcia and Renzo Gracie. How can one escape the traps from such a powerful guard? Shawn Williams has some good answers to this question. In a series of videos made exclusively for RGOA, he examines the butterfly guard in different setups, and offers antidotes for each way the guard player can act. Additionally, in your lifestyle lesson, Sylvio Behring offers strategies to control an aggressor without throwing a single punch.

LESSON PLAN

Smash pass vs. butterfly guard

Smash pass vs. butterfly guard

Although very effective, the butterfly guard can be beaten. Shawn Williams shows a pass that is based on keeping your opponent with their back flat on the ground while you smash right into the mount. Watch how Williams positions his head during the progression to avoid getting guillotined.

Butterfly guard pass with low underhook

Butterfly guard pass with low underhook

When he tries to smash-pass the butterfly but the guard player finds room to adjust themselves and regain the hooks, Shawn Williams likes doing a low underhook, as if hugging his opponent's back just above the waist. This type of control eliminates any space between the fighters' torsos. Note how Williams takes advantage of that to control a leg with his fingers in a V shape. Then he gets past one of his opponent's legs and gets across side.

Body lock pass

Body lock pass

The moment the guard player raises his torso in an attempt to underhook Shawn Williams, Williams intercepts him with a body lock. Note that with this control in place, Williams manages to get his opponent's back flat on the ground and advance on the side of the arm that is controlled, until reaching side control.
