Providing a unique experience, the program goes beyond technique, with details, concepts and fundamentals.
Born on April 7, 1975, Shawn Williams is a BJJ teacher in Los Angeles, Calif. As a competitor, he has made his mark in the ADCC and multiple IBJJF tournaments.
Although very effective, the butterfly guard can be beaten. Shawn Williams shows a pass that is based on keeping your opponent with their back flat on the ground while you smash right into the mount. Watch how Williams positions his head during the progression to avoid getting guillotined.
When he tries to smash-pass the butterfly but the guard player finds room to adjust themselves and regain the hooks, Shawn Williams likes doing a low underhook, as if hugging his opponent's back just above the waist. This type of control eliminates any space between the fighters' torsos. Note how Williams takes advantage of that to control a leg with his fingers in a V shape. Then he gets past one of his opponent's legs and gets across side.
The moment the guard player raises his torso in an attempt to underhook Shawn Williams, Williams intercepts him with a body lock. Note that with this control in place, Williams manages to get his opponent's back flat on the ground and advance on the side of the arm that is controlled, until reaching side control.
