5 attacks from half-guard and one life lesson
Renzo Gracie Online Academy goes back to examining the half-guard, emphasizing the position's offensive aspects. Leandro Slaib presents five very efficient attacks, almost always wrapping with his arm one of the passer's legs -- a detail that keeps Slaib safe throughout the execution of sweeps or the progression to the back. In your lifestyle lesson, Wellington Megaton teaches how to recharge your energy, unwind and go back to the mat hungry for more.
Born on Aug. 14, 1981, Leandro Slaib is a BJJ teacher and a competitor. In 2002 he became a brown-belt world champion. A student under Hélio Soneca, Slaib is a half-guard specialist.
Leandro Slaib teaches how to use your opponent's lapel (or even the belt or a sleeve) as a support point for you to wrap their leg with your arm. With this control, you will be safe in case your opponent tries to pass your half-guard by crossing their knee. Leandro stresses the importance of forbidding your opponent from getting your back flat on the ground -- you must place yourself sideways. Pay attention, also, to the part of the lapel you must grab to prevent the passer breaking your grip.
Use your knee to unbalance an opponent who is trying to pass your half-guard. This technique is directly tied to the control that Leandro performs on the lapel of his opponent, wrapping his leg with an arm. The lapel keeps the opponent under control, while the knee functions as the trigger to activate the trap. Strive to conclude the sweep with the guard already passed, stabilizing side control.
Often, as they realize they are getting swept on the traditional half-guard, a passer switches base and moves to the inverted half-guard. In this lesson, Leandro Slaib teaches you how to remake the adjustments quickly, keeping your opponent under the constant threat of a sweep, even after the inversion. Pay attention to the grip change made on the passer's jacket. And as Leandro points out, don't forget about your leg -- there is a simple way to prevent leg locks.
