In July 2018, Renzo Gracie made history by winning an MMA match at 51, against an opponent ten years younger. He fought historic bouts in Pride FC in the 90s and became a crucial player in the transition between vale-tudo and modern MMA. He also stood out through the birth and rise of submission wrestling organization the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, where he became a two-time champion, and also won a super fight at the age of 50. Renzo is one of the most respected martial arts teachers in the world and runs a 15,000 sq. ft. academy located in the heart of Manhattan, NY.
UFC idol Frankie Edgar reveals a way for you to control your opponent from their back in a no-gi match. It's a position he learned from Renzo Gracie and whose effectiveness he was able to prove in MMA fights. Note that instead of seeking the seat belt control, Frankie controls his opponent's tricep region, finding a great angle to attack with a choke.
When the guard player takes their back off the floor, raising their torso to underhook the passer, the guard player tends to expose their own neck, momentarily becoming vulnerable to a choke. Tom DeBlass draws attention to this frequent scenario and shows how the passer can finish their opponent via guillotine. Notice: This is no ordinary guillotine. There is an adjustment detail, a type of lapel control that DeBlass learned from Renzo and which increases the move's potency.
There are those who like to pass the half-guard hugging their opponent's head. Gregor Gracie prefers to seek the underhook, wrapping the guard player's arm simultaneously with his own two arms. Note that Gregor also projects his body diagonally over his opponent's torso, imposing pressure. It's a pass that Gregor learned from Renzo and that can lead to either the mount or side control.
