Turtle escapes

There are those who use the all-fours position to attack, baiting opponents to surprise them with unexpected traps. It's a strategy that has proven effective for some, but it certainly doesn't fit everybody's game. The defensive aspects of the position, however -- those are universal. Every fighter must know techniques to protect themselves when they are on all fours, and also to safely move on to other positions, or even to counter-attack if there's an opening in the midst of the transitions. That is what Rolles Gracie, Leo Tunico and Shawn Williams teach on this Jiu-Jitsu classes. Pay attention to all the details revealed by them, and never be unprepared for attacks from the back.

LESSON PLAN

Guard recovery from all fours

Guard recovery from all fours

When we are on all fours in a BJJ match, we must protect our neck against choke attempts, as well as close up the gaps so that our opponent can't get the hooks in with their legs. Note that Rolles Gracie only starts moving once he is sure these criteria are met. Then he quickly shrimps to the side and right after, with an abrupt motion, repositions himself with his back on the ground, playing guard.

A counter with hook from all fours

A counter with hook from all fours

The moment Rolles starts moving his hips to escape the all-fours position and try to restore his guard, he notices that there is room to underhook his opponent, advancing his left arm flush with his opponent’s armpit. Note how Rolles uses the underhook as a support point to take his opponent down with his back against the ground, ending up in side control.

From all fours to half-guard

From all fours to half-guard

To escape the all-fours position migrating to the half-guard, Leo Tunico controls (by the sleeve) the hand with which his opponent is trying to choke him. In parallel, he grips his opponent's pants and thus manages to follow his movement. Watch how he shrimps laterally, reaching a position transversal to his opponent's body. That's how he finds sufficient space to underhook and trap his opponent on half-guard.
