Training Session - Back Take

The back-take opens up a range of possibilities for submissions. But in order for it to be effective, there are many requirements to control your opponent and bring the match to an end. In this training session, check out techniques taught by Luca Atalla, John Colish, Jean Jacques Machado, Rolles Gracie and Renzo Gracie. They include tips for taking the back on the ground and standing, with transitions and grips that will prove precious in your fights.

Renzo Gracie

In July 2018, Renzo Gracie made history by winning an MMA match at 51, against an opponent ten years younger. He fought historic bouts in Pride FC in the 90s and became a crucial player in the transition between vale-tudo and modern MMA. He also stood out through the birth and rise of submission wrestling organization the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, where he became a two-time champion, and also won a super fight at the age of 50. Renzo is one of the most respected martial arts teachers in the world and runs a 15,000 sq. ft. academy located in the heart of Manhattan, NY.

LESSON PLAN

Maintaining the back-take

Maintaining the back-take

This lesson will require special attention, because you must (more than in others) see, test, feel, see again. These are positioning details that can allow you to block an escape from the back-take, but they are difficult to show on video. Follow Jean Jacques's tips and use your legs and hip -- not the hands -- to maintain control of the back. And remember: If you curve yourself like a ball, you'll roll like a ball.

Escape from the back-take

Escape from the back-take

There’s no position less comfortable in BJJ than having your back taken, so this is the time to use fundamental techniques to cancel any attacks and get out of this critical situation.

Transition: choke from the back to clock choke

Transition: choke from the back to clock choke

When you make the grips for the choke from the back, your opponent may defend themselves by getting on all fours, giving you the chance to employ the clock technique. Right then, Renzo shows a detail that can make a difference against stronger opponents.
