RGOA – 2018 in review

Renzo Gracie Online Academy has had an incredible year. From January to December, month after month, we were able to bring you the world of jiu-jitsu in a complete way, with the help of many of the icons of the gentle art. Each week, it was with great satisfaction that we built the evolution of BJJ together, with directions to complement your training, optimize your defenses, attacks and submissions, bringing thorough details that will often save you from a defeat or enable you to clinch a win.

And since we breathe this art every day, we made a point out of bringing you the BJJ Lifestyle, where we got to listen to many of those responsible for making this a global martial art.

RGOA is very proud of this year, in which we have been able to count on you and your opinions to produce content that keeps growing in relevance and quality. That's why this retrospective features 12 positions -- one from each month -- that are extremely relevant, brought to life by Renzo Gracie, Jean Jacques Machado, Shawn Williams, André Monteiro, Garry Tonon, Paulo Guillobel, Rafael Costa, Ralph Gracie, Hélio Soneca and Roger Gracie.

We hope you enjoy this selection, and thank you again for bringing us closer to excellence each day.

Renzo Gracie

In July 2018, Renzo Gracie made history by winning an MMA match at 51, against an opponent ten years younger. He fought historic bouts in Pride FC in the 90s and became a crucial player in the transition between vale-tudo and modern MMA. He also stood out through the birth and rise of submission wrestling organization the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, where he became a two-time champion, and also won a super fight at the age of 50. Renzo is one of the most respected martial arts teachers in the world and runs a 15,000 sq. ft. academy located in the heart of Manhattan, NY.

LESSON PLAN

Choke from half-guard

Choke from half-guard

On top, your opponent wins the pummel with their right arm and tries to pass your half-guard by progressively sprawling. Learn a sneaky, effective choke to surprise them along the way. Review this program: Half Guard: sweeps and submissions - André Monteiro

Americana from the mount

Americana from the mount

One of Paulo Guillobel's favorite moves is the americana. Notice Guillobel's change in hip-positioning when he controls his opponent's arm. Important detail: before reaching the americana, there are other armlock options along the way. Review this program:Mount: Control and submissions - Paulo Guillobel

X-guard sweep starting from the De la Riva guard

X-guard sweep starting from the De la Riva guard

One of the most efficient ways for you to frustrate a passer is to constantly change up your guard position. For example: when they try to get past your De la Riva, change into an X-guard, tying a strategical knot in your opponent's head. It's one of Rafael Costas' favorite variations. Notice that when he concludes the sweep, Costa uses the technical lift. Review this program: X-guard - Rafael Costa
