Providing a unique experience, the program goes beyond technique, with details, concepts and fundamentals.
Born on Aug. 4, 1985, Christian Xaropinho has been practicing BJJ for around 25 years. A teacher in Chicago, Illinois, he has stood out in several IBJJF competitions and achieved the title of blue-belt world champion. In MMA, Xaropinho is undefeated with five wins.
The adjustments of the DLR guard are very efficient to help you neutralize a passer's movement as soon as they manage to open the guard and stand up. Of course, though, the position has more than just defensive virtues. Note how Renzo Gracie uses the De la Riva’s cogs to surprise the passer with a lob sweep, ending up on the mount. The secret is to position your hips under theirs -- thus your opponent becomes lighter, which makes the move work.
Working with the DLR guard, Christian Xaropinho uses his hands to control Leo Tunico's pants and one of his sleeves. The moment Tunico slides his knee diagonally, Christian pushes the sleeve grip against the passer's stomach. Simultaneously, he activates the hook with his right leg to slightly raise Tunico's body. Note that this isn't an act of strength. Xaropinho uses the passer's movement against him, resulting in a smooth somersault and the consolidation of the sweep.
When his opponent tries to pass the DLR guard by diagonally crossing their knee, Christian Xaropinho likes to use their movement to sweep them with a backward somersault. But often his opponent manages to defend by propping one hand on the ground. Aware of this possibility, Xaropinho has a variation ready to go. Note that he undoes the DLR hook, beginning to use his left foot propped against the passer's hip. Thus he is able to amplify the leverage of the sweep.
