Providing a unique experience, the program goes beyond technique, with details, concepts and fundamentals.
At 51, Renzo Gracie again entered an MMA ring, to fight an opponent ten years his junior at One FC: Reign of Kings in the Philippines.
As well as the win, he later brought home a much bigger prize -- lessons on how to prepare technically and psychologically to feel confident to the point where all your actions are effective, even at an age where most are thinking about enjoying their grandkids.
At the request of many of our followers on social media, we asked him to organize a lesson plan aimed at transforming the preparation of an athlete for a fight.
With that in mind, soon after his win, Renzo created the program "Lessons from Manila," which presents the techniques used in the fight, variations that were looked at, and how his psychological preparation was done with the goal of maximum effectiveness.
In July 2018, Renzo Gracie made history by winning an MMA match at 51, against an opponent ten years younger. He fought historic bouts in Pride FC in the 90s and became a crucial player in the transition between vale-tudo and modern MMA. He also stood out through the birth and rise of submission wrestling organization the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, where he became a two-time champion, and also won a super fight at the age of 50. Renzo is one of the most respected martial arts teachers in the world and runs a 15,000 sq. ft. academy located in the heart of Manhattan, NY.
Renzo says he has never felt in such good physical condition as for his latest fight, against Yuki Kondo in One Championship. Indeed, at 51, Renzo was flying as he fought his way into finishing the 43-year-old Japanese idol. In this lesson, Renzo reveals the secrets of his training leading up to the bout. Renzo says he and the team managed to dose the intensity of the training sessions so his body could recover.
Thorough studying of his opponent was a major factor contributing to the win. Here, Renzo teaches how a BJJ fighter must map out their opponent’s game, identifying virtues and weaknesses as well as tendencies. Then it's time to use imagination, to create hypotheses, to remember the plan the entire time. And most intriguing: If during the match, you realize the strategy isn't working, you must be able to adapt, just like Renzo did in Manila. Listen to Renzo's own account here.
The positioning during the stand-up portion, controlling the distance, the improvisation, the feint to get the single-leg, the back-take, the hook that projected his opponent to the ground, the back control, the finish via choke. Master Renzo Gracie demonstrates all the technical details that made his win over Yuki Kondo possible at One Championship: Reign of Kings in June of 2018.
